Another good night of sleep in the forest. It's our last day in Ranomafana National Park.
The workers start breaking stones with hammers after their rice and beans breakfast. The day before they carried 50lbs cement bags to this place, it's about 2 1/2 hours away and 1200ft lower... All this for a meager $3 pay, $6 if they go back and forth twice. I'm suddenly ashamed of the price tag on our dried food packs that they kept to recycle...
We make a final tour looking for wildlife in the morning and then start heading back to the civilization. The more I'm staying in this forest the more I wish I could stay longer. The leeches on my feet and the rain that came back do not change my mind.
As we enter the suburbs of Ranomafana we see clear cuts that have been made to grow bananas and rice. But Hery is optimistic, during the past 5 years the clear cuts have slowed down, and many parks have opened. Tourism might be the only chance lemurs still have!!
